Sports Briefs: Aguillon propels San Rafael boys in 2OT victory

Jax Aguillon scored 19 points to lead San Rafael High’s boys basketball team to a 61-59 double overtime win over Campolindo to earn fifth place in the 16-team Damian Lillard Classic. Luke Shapiro opened the game with 11 straight points to give the Bulldogs an early lead.

Aguillon took over in the waning minutes by scoring San Rafael’s last four points in regulation, including a game-tying basket with 2 seconds on the clock, and five big points in both overtimes. Wyatt Tornello’s free throw gave the team the lead for good in the second overtime, and Kannon Wood iced the game with a rebound and free throw with 0.4 seconds to go. Shapiro ended the game with 25 points and eight  rebounds, and Tornello added nine points and 13 rebounds.

  • Wes Harrison made seven 3-pointers, including three late in the first half that swung the game in Terra Linda’s favor as the Trojans secured a 74-40 victory against Redwood Christian at the Sonoma County Classic on Tuesday. Harrison, who tied for team-high honors with 25 points, keyed an 11-0 run that saw TL take a 31-24 lead into the half. TL stretched the lead in the third quarter and cruised from there. Evan Brewster also scored 25 points for TL (7-4).
  • Henry Dibble made a pair of clutch free throws with 2.2 seconds left in overtime as Marin Catholic rallied for a 96-95 win against University in the Bambauer Classic on Tuesday.   • San Domenico got a big night from big man Oskar Valiauga in Tuesday’s 45-31 victory over Bay Counties League rival Urban in the consolation championship at the Don Bambauer Classic hosted by Marin Catholic. Valiauga finished the game with 20 points and earned all-tournament recognition. The Panthers (11-3) have one game against Athenian on Tuesday before opening their BCL slate against Marin Academy on Jan. 8. San Domenico and Urban meet again in league play on Jan. 16.
  • Archie Williams High lost 62-60 to Heritage on a last-second shot from the Patriots in Tuesday’s fifth-place game at the Don Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic.
  • The Branson School closed out its run at the Damien Classic with a narrow 57-52 consolation round loss in the Diamond Bracket to Campbell Hall at Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday.
  • Redwood High beat Monte Vista, 75-53 consolation round in the Silver Bracket at the Damien Classic on Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Kate Spaulding led all scorers with 26 points as the Branson School rolled to a 47-29 West Coast Jamboree victory over Warren on Tuesday. Barbara Hernandez added 10 points for the Bulls (9-5), who are ranked 11th in the state among Division 5 teams.

  • Clovis North beat San Marin, 58-45, in Tuesday’s final round of the West Coast Jamboree. The Mustangs (7-6) are scheduled to host American-Fremont on Saturday.

Girls wrestling

Archie Williams High senior Sofia De Jesus placed sixth at the two-day Sierra Classic in Reno. De Jesus, seeded 11th, went 5-3 with two pinfall wins and one tech fall.
