New Beginner-Friendly Flow Trail Opens 30 Minutes from the Heart of Denver

0

Colorado’s Front Range riders just got another reason to head out to one of the metro area’s most popular trail networks. A brand-new, bike-optimized beginner trail called Prairie Plunge recently opened in Bear Creek Lake Park, giving newer riders a chance to experience modern flow-trail features less than half an hour from the heart of Denver.

Unlike much of the existing terrain in Bear Creek Lake Park — where trails range from smooth winter training loops to rolling singletrack — this new section was designed specifically with mountain bikers in mind. Flowing turns, approachable berms, and smooth transitions make it an ideal place for beginners to build confidence and skills without feeling overwhelmed.

The trail actually consists of two short, parallel lines — one rated green/blue and the other blue — that run side by side for about a tenth of a mile and drop roughly 35 feet from start to finish. It ain't much, but it’s honest work, and it’s part of a growing network of bike-focused projects around Denver that are bringing mountain biking closer than ever for riders of all skill levels.

According to those involved in the project, Prairie Plunge represents the first purpose-built mountain bike trail in Bear Creek Lake Park designed to feel bike-optimized right from the start. That’s notable for a trail system that’s traditionally leaned more toward mixed-use than mountain-bike-first design.

For low-key locals looking to keep rides mellow and fun through the winter months — or maybe sneak out on a lunch break for a quick pedal — Bear Creek Lake Park offers a decent mix of options, from easy singletrack and scenic multi-use paths to longer loops like the Bear Creek Lake Trail Loop. Now, that mix includes something new for riders focused on flow and beginner MTB skill building. Add in a few days at Ruby Hill or Valmont, and Front Range riders have access to a surprisingly deep lineup of local skill parks, especially with the unreasonably warm weather sticking around this winter.

Whether you’re easing into riding for the first time or just looking for a fun, low-stress trail to ride with your family, Prairie Plunge might be worth checking out next time you’re in Lakewood.
