‘Suit us a little bit…’: Indian coach speaks about Guwahati’s pitch being better than Eden Gardens

India and South Africa are facing each other in the second Test of the two-match series, and the Barsapara Stadium track is more suited to Indian team’s current template, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said on Saturday (November 22), but insisted that the result of a Test match is determined by the quality of a team and not the pitch.

Ryan Ten Doeschate termed the first day track as the one where scoring runs was a tad difficult. Speaking of the match, most of the South African top-order batters were got decent starts, but failed to convert them to bigger numbers and were dismissed without anyone reaching the 50-run mark. The visitors ended day one on 247 for six after electing to bat.

My personal point of view is that the wicket very rarely determines who wins the game. If we’d played better in Kolkata, I feel we could have won the Test on that surface. But having said that, you’ve got to introspect and look at recent results. These sort of wickets maybe do suit us a little bit better,” Ten Doeschate said at the end of the opening day’s play.

Speaking about the match, South Africa won the toss and had elected to bat first. Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma came close to reaching the 50-run mark, but fell short to Indian bowling attack. From the hosts, Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball- claiming 3 wickets for 48 runs.
