Ecuador prison riot leaves 4 inmates dead and dozens injured

A riot at a prison in Ecuador has left four inmates dead and over 3o injured. Corrections officials say the violence erupted Sunday during the reorganization of inmates to a soon-to-open maximum-security facility. This incident comes less than two months after 14 inmates died at the same southwestern Ecuador prison. Officials regained control of the facility, but one police officer was also injured. Ecuador’s prisons are among the deadliest in Latin America due to overcrowding and gang activity. More than 500 people have died in prison riots since 2021, highlighting ongoing security challenges.
