Trump Urges Democrats to End Longest U.S. Government Shutdown
U.S. President Donald Trump urged Democrats to support a temporary budget deal and end the record-breaking federal government shutdown now crippling public services nationwide.
U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and fellow Democrats to stop “playing with people’s lives” and end the federal government shutdown, now in its 36th day.
Speaking at the U.S. Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Trump urged Democrats to support a temporary budget bill passed by the House of Representatives to reopen the government. He said the bill maintains 2024 fiscal levels approved under President Joe Biden’s administration.
Democrats, however, have rejected the proposal 14 times, demanding concessions that include restoring healthcare benefits for undocumented migrants and extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, widely known as “Obamacare.”
Trump accused Democrats of “holding Americans hostage,” saying the shutdown has left millions without food assistance, delayed paychecks for federal employees, and caused chaos at airports across the country.
The White House warned that prolonged inaction could disrupt essential services, from veterans’ healthcare to border security operations, while the Treasury Department has cautioned about potential economic fallout.
The shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, has already affected more than 800,000 federal workers, with many forced to rely on savings or emergency loans. Economists estimate losses of over $3 billion in government productivity and consumer spending.
Political analysts say the standoff underscores deep divisions between the White House and Congress, with both parties facing growing pressure from voters as the deadlock drags on.
