Jury set to resume deliberations in trial of Illinois deputy who killed Sonya Massey

An Illinois jury is set for a second day of deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of a sheriff’s deputy in the July shooting death of Sonya Massey, a Black woman who had called 911 for help. The jury received the case against 31-year-old Sean Grayson on Tuesday and met for more than 6 hours. Grayson and another deputy came to Massey’s home in Springfield in July 2024 after she reported a prowler. Body camera video of the shooting has been key evidence. Grayson argues that he feared for his safety when Massey picked up a hot pan from her stove.
