Patio House
Patio House in Aiguablava is a minimalist residence located in Aiguablava, Spain, designed by Arquitectura-G. This single-story dwelling organized around a 15×15-meter central courtyard demonstrates how classical Mediterranean patio typologies can inform contemporary residential design through colonnade structures and climate-responsive spatial strategies. The 2021-2025 project positions the house within a setback from original plot geometry, leaving the perimeter intact as natural ring surrounding the built intervention.
The main courtyard encircled by colonnade features central reflecting pool and three shade trees, establishing outdoor room at the dwelling’s core. A secondary courtyard functions as entrance, creating dual courtyard system that provides hierarchical spatial organization between public arrival and private family life. Fully operable windows and doors expose interior rooms to the courtyard through intermediate adjustable louver panels that block solar gain while permitting cross-ventilation, demonstrating passive climate control strategies essential for Mediterranean coastal contexts.
The continuous corridor circumnavigating the courtyard operates as variable-width porch that transforms from circulation passage into shared spaces including living room and kitchen. This gradient spatial condition blurs distinctions between interior and exterior occupation while providing flexible zones that can accommodate varied activities and seasonal use patterns. The roof reads as thin plane supported by columns on courtyard side and perimeter wall on exterior, creating covered transition spaces characteristic of Mediterranean vernacular architecture.
The structural system developed by Ofici:Arquitectura likely employs concrete or masonry construction appropriate for coastal exposure and seismic considerations relevant to Spanish Mediterranean contexts. The colonnade’s regular rhythm establishes modular order that simplifies construction while creating visual coherence around the courtyard perimeter.
