Shubman Gill reacts to India’s continued toss-losing streak, says, ‘Mere ko mere gharwale…’

New Delhi: India’s unfortunate streak of toss losses in ODIs continued as Australia won the toss and opted to bat in the third ODI at Sydney, extending the run to 18 consecutive defeats. India last won a toss in ODIs during the 2023 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium.

When questioned about whether coach Gautam Gambhir had stressed practicing toss-related strategies, Gill jokingly said, “Mere ko mere gharwale bhi bol rahe hai, kuch na kuch toss ke liye,” earning laughs in the press conference. The playful comment showed Gill’s relaxed approach toward a confident, low-pressure atmosphere within the team.

Gill also praised Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s impactful performance, who starred in India’s nine-wicket victory over Australia. “It’s great to see them back and enjoying themselves. They’ve been doing this for the past fifteen years for us, and to be able to watch them like this is truly special,” he said.

The two seasoned players recreated their prime with an unbeaten 168-run stand, guiding India to chase a modest 237 with 69 balls remaining at a packed Sydney Cricket Ground.

Talking about Ro-Ko’s influenec, Gill added, “I think as players, there was no doubt over either of them that they wouldn’t be able to perform. But definitely, it feels very good as a captain sitting outside and watching the match, seeing the two most senior players playing and getting the team through.”

Gill reflected on his own batting, highlighting a more cautious approach following earlier challenges in the series, “I think before coming here, in many batting innings, it doesn’t feel like it happens that you get starts, and you play good shots. In the first match, I got out down the leg side, so I wasn’t thinking too much about needing to do something about my batting… But I am not too worried about my performance in the past two or three matches.”
