Police to increase patrols during Halloween crackdown on impaired driving

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Get ready to see more state and local police on the road this week as New York State aims to crackdown on impaired and reckless driving for Halloween.

Increased traffic enforcement and patrols are set to begin on Saturday and will run through Halloween night, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. Drivers can expect multiple sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols during the enforcement period.

"Halloween should be fun and safe for everyone, regardless of how you choose to celebrate," Governor Hochul said. "Unfortunately, poor choices behind the wheel can lead to deadly consequences."

Officials say Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for pedestrians under 18 years old. This time last year, police issued 46,212 citations, 9,029 tickets for speeding, and arrested 1,260 people for impaired driving during the 2024 Halloween enforcement period.

Residents heading out to enjoy spooky season are encouraged to use the "Have a Plan" mobile app, which helps users contact taxi services and program a designated driver list.
