Don't wait, take that dream vacation now, advises AARP

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the holiday gift season nears, AARP found more people are booking what they consider a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

KXAN's Sally Hernandez spoke with AARP travel expert Steve Guilday for a closer look.

HERNANDEZ: "Why do you think more people are of that mindset of I'm not going to wait to take this once-in-a-lifetime trip? Why do it now?"

GUILDAY: Because you might not get the chance right? Health is a barrier, cost is a barrier, so don't put off that once-in-a-lifetime trip for some day that might never arrive. There are ways to make it affordable.

Trips are part of our lives, but once-in-a-lifetime trips are truly meaningful on a different level, and as we at AARP poll Americans every year, they tell us one of the barriers to travel and take once-in-a-lifetime trips is the cost, and their health.

So, we are here to encourage your viewers to take that once-in-a-lifetime trip, prioritize that, and find a way to make it work.

HERNANDEZ: When you are looking at these trips, is it for two travelers, or are these trips people want to take with their extended families to make more memories?

GUILDAY: You highlighted something that is continually popular. The notion of intergenerational travel.

More and more people probably think more of a couple, right? More and more are saying, 'Well, let's take the grandkids. Maybe we give mom and dad some relief, and we take the kids and go somewhere special to build those memories.' So intergenerational travel is increasingly popular.

HERNANDEZ: Tell me a little bit about how you can help people save and make that trip come true?

The advice there is to book early and know what you are booking because you might think you are booking the best price, but if it comes with a lot of asterisks and fine print, it's not cancellable and not changeable, maybe it's not the best price, so pay attention to what you are booking.
