Get food as low as $4 from restaurants, bakeries, and more with phone app

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- "Save good food from going to waste," is the slogan for Too Good To Go, an organization that helps connect people with fresh meals and foods for less than half the price.

The Danish-founded company, which has since expanded worldwide, helps restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, and other establishments get rid of surplus food by offering it on the Too Good To Go app for as low as $4.

New Yorkers who sign up for the app will be able to find meals and surprise bags of goods from establishments in their area. After paying for the item in the app, users will get a specific time frame in which to pick up their order.

Surprise bags from Too Good To Go may be filled with a restaurant's forgotten pickup orders, a variety of leftover goods from bakeries, slices of pizza and garlic knots, and surplus grocery items. While grocery stores warn that some items may be past their "sell by" date, the products will still be safe to eat.

The organization first took off in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2015 to help combat food waste and since then has expanded to 19 countries with more than 100 million users.
