Deion Sanders Supports Colorado Students After Huge Home Win
The Colorado Buffaloes entered Saturday's game against Iowa State after two consecutive losses, in need of an unlikely victory to turn their season around.
They were able to pick up that victory with an impressive effort against a ranked team, putting the team's record back to 3-4 and giving them a better chance of bowl eligibility with only five games left in the season.
The win was head coach Deion Sanders' second against a ranked team as Colorado's head coach, dating back to his very first game with the school. Colorado students stormed the field after the game, and while no injuries were reported, a fine from the Big 12 is almost certainly set to follow.
'Coach Prime' Supports Students' Celebration
In his post-game press conference, Sanders supported Colorado students' decision to rush the field, regardless of any impending discipline.
"Is it a fine?" the coach asked. "Come on, man. That ain't right. I want to see the kids rush the field. I absolutely love it."
Despite being warned by the Folsom Field PA announcer that arrests and fines could result from rushing the field, students did so anyway. Sanders praised the Colorado security staff for making sure he or no one else was injured, but continued to question the necessity for - and the amount of - a potential fine.
"How is it $50,000 for rushing the field? Who made that a rule?," he asked after someone in the room suggested the number. The head coach then jokingly suggested that the students should pool their resources together to pay the fine themselves.
"I mean, these kids, well, we have 50,000 (fans), right? We can chip in," Sanders said. "Let's chip in. That's how it was when I grew up. You know, we going somewhere, everybody, before you get in the car with some gas, you gotta chip in."
The Big 12 hasn't issued a fine to Colorado, but a precedent has been set. Last year, Arizona State was fined $25,000 for a premature field storming that took place before the final play of the game. Colorado was also fined $25,000 last year for storming the field after their dramatic Hail Mary win over Baylor.
Colorado's Emotional Upset Victory
Colorado's win on Saturday comes as Sanders continues to deal with issues related to his health. He underwent a procedure last week to treat blood clots in his legs, and revealed that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer during the offseason.
"The locker room had a different vibe today," the head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer said after the game.
"We shouldn't be sitting up here with a plethora of losses. We should be sitting up here with a steering wheel and in the driver's seat."
