NJ family rides out storm on sailboat: 'Nowhere is safe'
SEA BRIGHT, N.J. -- Talk about battening down the hatches.
Prepping for the nor'easter looks a bit different for Max Lopez and his partner, Abby Rumph. The couple, along with their 5-month-old daughter, Windy, live on their sailboat.
"There's not a whole lot more we can do than we've already done [to prepare]," Lopez said.
Lopez and Rumph have lived on the boat for three years, and they've weathered storms before -- but something about this one feels different.
"Usually they just pass by you by, you have a windy period - but this one is gonna hang out for two days. That's 48 hours of 30 knots of wind -- and it's just gonna push all the water in here," Lopez said.
Plus, having a baby on board adds its own challenges.
"Now that she's starting to move, nowhere is safe pretty much," said Rumph.
But they will weather it out below deck, in their cozy living room and three bedrooms - the place they've made their home, dreaming of what's next.
"Our goal is to eventually sail around the world," said Rumph.
Back on land, others are prepping for the storm in a more conventional way.
Ray Soika and his dog Dylan took a trip to the beach before the rain started.
"Were not that scared about it," Soika said.
"Hopefully it’s not gonna be as bad as they say it is, but who knows."
For them, storms are a fact of life when you live down the shore.
"We lived through Sandy, a couple of nor'easters. If this is over in a couple of days, we’ll be okay," he said.
