Vehicle fire in Lafayette contained, mechanic injured
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A mechanic suffered moderate injuries in an accidental fire in Lafayette.
Lafayette firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the 100 block of Hummingbird Lane at 10:50 a.m. this morning. Multiple fire units were dispatched to the fire scene initially reported as an apartment and multiple vehicles burning.
Officials said when firefighters arrived on scene, two vehicles parked near the apartment building were on fire. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the vehicles. The exterior of the apartment building sustained minor heat damage.
Officials said the mechanic working on one of the vehicles suffered moderate burns from the fire. Acadian The mechanic was transported to a local hospital.
Fire officials determined the mechanic was utilizing a shop vacuum to remove fuel from the gas tank of one of the vehicles. The vapors ignited creating a rapid-fire situation.
The cause of the fire was ruled an accident.
