Saratoga Hospital lifts mask policy after measles case

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Saratoga Hospital has lifted its masking policy for all patients, staff and visitors as of Tuesday morning. According to the hospital, the mask policy was issued on July 18 in response to a measles case traced back to the hospital.

According to Saratoga Hospital, the confirmed measles case was a Vermont resident who had recently traveled abroad. The person went to the hospital last week, wearing a mask, and was transferred to Albany Medical Center soon after. Hospital staff said that the mask mandate was put into place out of an abundance of caution to the community.

"We’re fortunate to have such a strong and fast acting team here. So as soon as we heard that this patient did test positive, it was all hands on deck," Allie Curran, director of marketing and communications for Saratoga Hospital, said. "And we want to keep our community and our patients safe."

According to the hospital, after contact tracing and close monitoring, no additional cases have been identified, therefore, making the mask requirement not necessary on Tuesday. Those who are still cautious, symptomatic or immunocompromised are encouraged to wear their masks.

"We want to thank our patients, staff and community for their continued support and cooperation," Dr. Donnarumma, Chief medical Officer at Saratoga Hospital, said. "We remain committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all."

Measles is caused by a virus that is spread by coughing or sneezing into the air. It is a highly contagious, serious respiratory disease that causes rash and fever. You can contract the disease by breathing in the virus or by touching a contaminated surface, then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth. There have been 14 confirmed cases across the state in 2025.
