Kenya opposition leaders demand president's resignation over shooting comments
Kenya’s opposition leaders have demanded President William Ruto’s resignation after his order for police to shoot looters during protests. On Wednesday, Ruto defended the directive, saying he would not tolerate “anarchy” disguised as peaceful demonstrations. Human rights groups have urged police restraint as protests have intensified, with over 50 deaths reported in recent weeks. The unrest began after a blogger’s death in police custody last month and escalated following the fatal shooting of civilian Boniface Kariuki during a protest. On Thursday, an officer was charged with Kariuki’s murder. Thousands attended his burial on Friday, calling for justice.
