Major Airline Completely Wipes Popular Route From Schedule
There was a time when travel to the United States was booming, but that hasn't been the case in 2025. As early as February and March of this year, the U.S. was experiencing a decrease in travel to the States. According to a report from Oxford Economics, "Canadians returning from visits to the U.S. by land plunged 31.9 percent year-over-year in March, while air arrivals fell 13.5 percent."
In addition to those statistics, "overseas visitor arrivals to the U.S. in March contracted 11.6 percent, with particularly sharp declines from Germany and the U.K.," according to Oxford Economics. Travelers from Mexico to the U.S. by air also fell 23.0 percent in March.
So, there's certainly a decrease in demand to travel to the United States this year. Now, one major airline is making a big change to match the plummeting demand for travel to the U.S.
Porter, a Canadian airline, plans to suspend another route to the U.S., according to Airline Geeks, joining Air Canada and WestJet, who have also cut their transborder schedules.
In November 2024, Porter started non-stop flights between Ottawa and Las Vegas, NV, operating four times per week. These flights were originally set to end in June and start up again in October. According to Cirium Diio schedule data, per Airline Geeks, that route is no longer scheduled to start up again in the fall and "has been completely wiped from the airline's schedule." Now, the only Porter route to Las Vegas will fly out of Toronto. The move follows Porter also ending flights to San Diego in May.
"We are in the process of finalizing our winter schedule and it's possible the route may not return," a spokesperson shared with Airline Geeks in a statement. "LAS is still available as a connection in Toronto. We hope we are able to bring the route back at a later date."
Instead of the U.S. flights, Porter is adding routs that overfly the U.S., such as to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and a bevy of other non-U.S. travel hotspots.
