Guatemala's president denies new asylum deal with US
Guatemala's President Bernardo Arévalo denies signing a new asylum agreement with the U.S. He addressed the issue Friday after U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed otherwise. The two met Thursday in Guatemala, signing a joint security deal allowing U.S. officers to train local agents at the capital’s airport. However, Noem stated she received a separate "safe third country" agreement, similar to one in Honduras. Arévalo clarified Guatemala is only honoring a February agreement to accept deported citizens from Central America. He emphasized Guatemala’s different approach but expressed willingness to aid Nicaraguans fleeing political turmoil.
