Three elephants shot in Bulilima

A HERD of elephants has in the past week invaded villages in Bulilima District in search of food, in the trail, destroying the drying harvest in small holder farming communities and threatening livelihoods.
It has turned out to be a clash for survival, as the human- wildlife conflict continues in the area.
As part of efforts to mitigate the conflict which has existed over the years, Bulilima Rural District Council on Thursday, shot three elephants in Madlambudzi ward.
The trio which were leading the herd had become a menace. They had found a “food” sanctuary in the farmers’ harvest.
This news crew observed late Wednesday afternoon a herd of elephants between Mafa and Khandamhlophe villages in Madlambudzi ward passing through the villagers’ fields heading towards Thekwane river.
These elephants are facing water stress as the once available water source, Maitengwe Dam, had its walls damaged during the rainy season.
The dam which is in need of US$500 000 in order to be rehabilated, is the lifeline of the Campfire programme as it attracts tourists interested in sport hunting.
The animals come from mostly Hwange National Park, Tsholotsho and even Botswana.
Bulilima Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr Biliati Mulauzi, said there were making frantic efforts to address the issue.
“In collaboration with the Safari Operator and Zimparks we managed drive them away although in the process three elephants were shot yesterday (Thursday).
“We suspect the elephants are coming from Hwange National Park, Tsholotsho and even Botswana,” said Mr Mulauzi.
This is a developing story
