'Talk about whiplash!' CNN anchor shocked by dramatic Trump flip-flop
CNN's Dana Bash expressed her shock over President Donald Trump's latest flip-flop on the question of regime change in Iran.
Trump made his recent comments aboard Air Force One Tuesday, en route to the NATO summit in The Hague.
"I want you to listen to something else that the president said, and this is about regime change," Bash said to correspondent Erin Burnett when introducing a clip of Trump's assertion. "You talk about whiplash!" she exclaimed.
"The whole question of what the U.S. policy is, vis-à-vis the regime in Iran, whether or not it is policy for it to change — now we're hearing the president sing a different tune than we just heard about a day ago."
On Sunday, Trump hinted that he was all for regime change, after previously saying ousting the ayatollah wasn't the administration's goal.
A reporter flat out asked the president during Tuesday's flight, "Do you want to see regime change in Iran?"
"No," Trump responded, before continuing, "If there was, there was. But, no, I'd like to see everything calm down as quickly as possible. Regime change takes chaos, and ideally, we don't want to see so much chaos."
Bash remarked that regime change "is quite literally the opposite of calm."
Burnett brought up the point that the calm could come to an end if Iran's leader was not in the loop on the ceasefire deal with Israel.
"The ayatollah, the supreme leader, being in a bunker underneath Tehran because he was in fear of his life when this deal was done and perhaps being out of contact with the people who had to make the deal is something that, as we look back on this moment, may end up being a very significant reality, that as the timeline plays out and we see where this goes, we look back and say, okay, that was something very important," Burnett said.
