Final Season of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Revealed
One of the best-reviewed science fiction series to hit the streaming world in recent years is finally coming to an end.
While the sci-fi genre is a well-traveled one with hits like Stranger Things and Silo, the space exploration section of the genre was lacking following the end of The Expanse. Disney +'s Andor certainly helped fill the gaps, but so too did Paramount +'s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise in the 23rd century during the decade before the Star Trek: The Original Series from the late 1960's.
The show has been nominated for multiple awards throughout its run, including a Best Drama Series nomination from the Critics Choice Awards in 2023 and a win for Best Science Fiction Television Series from the Saturn Awards in 2022.
It will have the chance to add to those awards with a third season debuting in July. Before the third season even kicks off, though, Deadline revealed the series, which previously announced its renewal for a fourth season, will be getting a fifth and final season - with a slight change.
The first two seasons featured 10 episodes and the third will continue that trend. However, the fifth and final season will feature a shortened run of just six episodes.
“From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman said in a statement.
“We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”
The first season of the show, which debuted on May 5, 2022, received a 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes while the second season received a 97 percent for an average rating of 98 percent.
Reviews for the third season, which drops on July 17, have not been revealed.
