Northern lights may be visible over NY for second time: NOAA

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Stargazers might have another chance to see the northern lights in New York on Monday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The aurora was visible over the state on Sunday night after a geomagnetic storm made its way over to New York from Canada. The lights were expected to be “quite bright and active,” according to NOAA.

The probability of seeing lights on Monday night is between 10-50%. The phenomenon will likely be in the sky starting around 10:45 p.m. for northern New York, later shifting to cover the whole state by 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, NOAA’s aurora forecast map showed.

Anyone not directly over the aurora may be able to see it if the lights are bright enough, it’s dark out and they're not near city illumination, according to NOAA. Some lights can be seen up to 1,000 kilometers away.

"For many people, the aurora is a beautiful nighttime phenomenon that is worth traveling to arctic regions just to observe. It is the only way for most people to actually experience space weather," NOAA wrote on its website.
