BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The operator of The Groove Lounge, a Buffalo bar that was shut down by the city multiple times in recent years due to violent incidents, was sentenced Friday morning for drug possession, according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

Michael R. Jackson, 61, was sentenced to five years of probation for possession of cocaine with intent to sell.

Officials said Jackson was driving on Jefferson Avenue and Brown Street without a valid driver's license around 2:10 p.m. on March 1, 2024. Investigators found cocaine and a scale in the vehicle, as well as packing materials and cutting agents at Jackson's residence.

In March 2025, he pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He was originally charged with the following:

  • First-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Four counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia
  • Numerous vehicle and traffic violations

At least three shooting incidents have occurred at or near The Groove Lounge since 2018.
