GOP senator swings at Elon Musk for DOGE's biggest failure
A Republican senator came out swinging for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency Sunday, complaining that it slashed workers and funds without showing compassion.
Utah Sen. John Curtis told CNN’s Manu Raju that much of the work DOGE has done to cut government spending was needed.
But he didn’t hold back in his criticism of how it was done.
“We need to cut, and I’ve talked over and over again about how we're spending $2 trillion,” he told Raju.
“But that doesn't mean we shouldn't have compassion. That doesn't mean when we're letting a federal employee go that we shouldn't be thoughtful about. Perhaps that's the worst day of their life.

“I think that was one of the problems with DOGE. It lacked what people saw as compassion and thoughtfulness. I do think we need to make cuts. and i think DOGE has opened the door, opened our eyes to some doors that are very problematic.
“But having run a business, having been mayor, I know this goes over a lot better. if you have a dose of compassion when you're doing it.”
Musk’s agency fired more than 200,000 government workers in the name of slashing government spending. Some it had to scramble to rehire after it was discovered the staff members were doing vital work.
The rapid changes have caused chaos and confusion across the government.
Earlier in the interview, Curtis had told Raju that Republicans had a duty to push back against Trump if they disagreed with him.
