Trump tells GOP senators he's mulling big tax changes — raising them: report

President Donald Trump told Republican senators he is open to major tax changes — raising tax rates on high-earning Americans, according to Semafor.

The comments came last week during a sitdown on his agenda with Senate Budget Committee Republicans.

When Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) asked Trump for his view of a proposal to hike taxes on high earners, the president said he’d be fine with the idea.

However, the remark was not seen as full support from those in the meeting. Instead, it was viewed as a "willingness to entertain higher rates for upper-income taxpayers aligns with recent positive signals about the approach from some White House allies."

A tax hike is one of the many promises on Trump's agenda that working-class voters and Democrats are holding the president to.

The White House did not respond to Semafor's request for comment.

According to the report, House Republicans, like Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), have yet to receive the memo. Both have said they are trying to "reduce taxes" or "keep rates where they are," respectively.
