Shock Photos Show Myanmar Earthquake Damage
A series of shock photos have emerged that show the level of damage caused by the Myanmar earthquake.
The massive quake struck Myanmar, with damage seen as far away as Thailand, on March 28, 2025.
The quake's magnitude reached 7.7, with a series of aftershocks, according to The Associated Press.
The quake struck in the middle of the day near the populous city of Mandalay, according to The AP. In addition to the photos, terrifying videos emerged from the earthquake, showing shaking skyscrapers and people in a pool in Bangkok.
The death toll is expected to rise, as rescuers search for people trapped in rubble, AP noted.
In addition to the human death toll, the earthquake damaged and destroyed a number of cultural sites, including monasteries and monuments, The New York Times reported.
More than 3,000 buildings were damaged in the powerful quake, according to The Times.
According to The BBC, Myanmar is considered "one of the most geologically 'active' areas in the world," making it prone to earthquakes.
BBC noted that this earthquake was very "shallow," meaning that its effects were felt more acutely by people in Myanmar but also in neighboring Thailand.
In the last century, the area experienced six earthquakes that were more than 7 magnitude, BBC reported. The socioeconomic struggles in Myanmar compounded the problems.
"General poverty, major political upheaval, alongside other disasters - e.g. the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 - has distracted the country from concentrating on the unpredictable risks from earthquakes," Dr. Ian Watkinson told BBC.
