UN provided humanitarian aid to over 20 million people last year

0

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that in 2024, humanitarian assistance will be provided to at least 20.4 million people in Afghanistan. This initiative aims to address the pressing needs of individuals in the country who are facing extreme hardships.

On Wednesday, March 5, OCHA released a report stating that for 2025, the organization is requesting at least $3.06 billion to support the ongoing humanitarian response in Afghanistan. This funding will be crucial to provide assistance to those who continue to face significant challenges.

OCHA also highlighted that 48% of the necessary funding has yet to be secured, warning that there may not be enough resources to address sudden crises and emergencies in the current year. This situation has raised concerns about the ability to effectively respond to urgent humanitarian needs.

According to the report, over the past year, an additional 14.9 million people have received food assistance. Despite this, the situation remains dire, with millions of Afghans still in desperate need of support.

In another report released on Sunday, OCHA noted that Ramadan is approaching in Afghanistan, with nearly 15 million people in the country facing severe food insecurity. This situation is expected to worsen, particularly as the region enters the holy month.

Currently, 3.1 million people in Afghanistan are grappling with acute hunger. This alarming figure underscores the critical need for sustained humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of millions of vulnerable individuals.

Meanwhile, international relief organizations have raised concerns about the increasing humanitarian needs in Afghanistan, particularly as the United States has suspended foreign aid to the country. The lack of external assistance could exacerbate the crisis for millions of Afghans already facing dire circumstances.

OCHA’s calls for increased support and funding highlight the urgent need to address Afghanistan’s deepening humanitarian crisis. The situation demands immediate attention and international collaboration to provide food, medical aid, and essential services to those in need.
