Polar vortex collapses sending late-season and largest cold to US

The polar vortex that has dealt the most brutal winter to much of the US in recent years is about to be broken down – but not before unleashing a late-season cold and the biggest yet.

A stratospheric warming event has begun, and the polar vortex is responding by sending high-pressure conditions to eastern Canada and Greenland, Severe Weather Europe reported.

The polar vortex will shatter and spread cold conditions across the US. It will also be the vortex’s disappearing act.

‘This is now the second and final disruption of the Polar Vortex in 2025,’ according to Severe Weather Europe.

‘It is also by far the largest one, sending the Polar Vortex into pieces, not returning again until Fall 2025.’

Cold air gathering in southern Canada will move into the northeastern, eastern and central US.

‘This is just one of the possible scenarios, but all are consistent with a weather pattern that is usually expected after the Stratospheric Warming event,’ stated Severe Weather Europe.

A polar vortex is a ‘large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles’ that ‘ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter’, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The polar vortex breakdown event is forecast to be more expansive than the tenth and coldest polar vortex that blasted across the US in mid-February and put 58million Americans under frigid weather warnings from the US-Canada border to Texas.

This winter has come with an unusually high number of polar vortexes of Arctic air. A typical season sees two or three, Atmospheric and Environmental Research seasonal forecast director Judah Cohen said previously.

Meanwhile, a strong spring storm system that battered the southern US is heading to the East Coast, and put more than 64million people from Florida to New York under severe weather alerts on Wednesday.

The system brought tornadoes and thunderstorms to the South and is taking aim at the Eastern Seaboard. According to FOX Weather, tornado and thunderstorm watches have been issued for parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia.
