Child killed and another injured after car driven onto rugby pitch

A child has died and another has been taken to hospital after a car was driven onto a rugby pitch in Cumbria.

Police were called to Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on Shap Road just before 5pm today following reports of a collision between a black BMW i40 and two children.

The driver, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Detectives are treating it as an isolated incident and said it is not believed to be terror related.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: ‘Immediate family members of both respective children have been informed.

‘Specialist investigators are at the scene and the area has been cordoned off as initial investigation enquiries take place.’

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police by reporting online, quoting incident number 195 of March 5.
