I’m 52 & have never smoked or had Botox but hate my mouth wrinkles with a passion – people say a £2 buy is the answer
ALTHOUGH growing older is a privilege, it comes with many signs of ageing that can destroy your confidence in no time.
This is exactly how one woman, Becky Clark Schrader, felt about her ”smokers’ lines” around the mouth, which she said she hated ”with a passion”.
Also known as lip lines, smokers’ lines are vertical wrinkles that can appear on your lips and extend from your upper lip to the tip of your nose. Lip wrinkles may range from fine, subtle lines to deep creases.
Typically developing around the age of 40, these lines can appear for a range of reasons, including the natural ageing process and certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking.
The underlying cause is activity of the muscle around the mouth, which becomes more active with time.
Desperate for a solution that didn’t involve any Botox or fillers, the mum, 52, took to TikTok to see if fellow beauty buffs could come t rescue – and they did.
The blue-eyed blonde claimed that she’s never smoked and had tried to conceal the visible lines with special products – but with no results.
She said in the video: ”I used the plumper and it’s supposed to help but it hasn’t, not one bit.
”It just makes it look like I don’t know how to put my lip gloss on.”
Becky went on: ”But I’m wondering if there’s a natural solution for this? If anyone’s used something that has helped these lines to go away?
”I hate them – with a passion […]. They drive me crazy.”
Although the US-based mum and grandma agreed that ageing should be seen as a privilege that not everyone, unfortunately, gets to experience, she was pleased to see thousands of helpful responses.
The video racked up over a staggering 2million views, with almost 9,000 beauty buffs racing to share their top tips – and there’s was one more popular than any other, using castor oil.
One person said: ”coconut oil & castor oil. but best solution is to not care.”
Another chimed in: ”I think mine are from years of drinking through a straw. I’m 56 and started using castor oil at night and it’s helping.”
”Castor oil – visible results FAST,” a third was also singing praises about the popular solution, which you can snap up from Ocado for as little as £2 for a 250ml bottle.
While castor oil has many properties that may help reduce wrinkles, there’s no direct evidence yet that proves this claim.
However, research has shown that the purse-friendly purchase is an effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory — both of which help fight free radicals and may slow the ageing process.
Castor oil contains fatty acids that have moisturising, skin health-enhancing, and antioxidant properties. These fatty acids may also help minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
What to know before using castor oil
Using castor oil topically is considered safe. However, skin reactions and allergies can occur.
Symptoms include:
- itching
- redness
- pain
- swelling
- rashes
Before using castor oil for wrinkles, try a skin patch test with the oil to make sure you aren’t allergic.
If you experience these symptoms while using castor oil for reducing wrinkles (or other skin care practices), discontinue use immediately. Seek medical attention or first aid for any skin reaction.
Castor oil for around the mouth
If you want to improve the appearance of smile lines and wrinkles in the area around your mouth and lips, the £2 bargain buy may be what you’ve been looking for.
The experts at Healthline suggest to follow the steps below for best results:
- Step 1: In the morning, cleanse your lips and the skin around your mouth and dry well.
- Step 2: Place one drop of castor oil onto the tip of your finger. Apply it to the skin around your mouth, especially in wrinkle-prone areas. If you have a castor oil-containing lip balm, you can apply that, too. Though, pure castor oil may be more effective.
- Step 3: Leave on skin for about 20 minutes, the time it takes for castor oil to absorb into your skin. Avoid drinking and eating in the meantime.
- Step 4: Afterward, wash your lips and the skin around your mouth. Apply moisturizers, makeup, and other products as usual.
- Repeat these steps each evening. For more impact, incorporate these steps into your routine daily.
