Taliban representatives meet Indian Ambassador in Tehran to discuss strengthening ties
The Afghanistan Embassy in Tehran, under the Taliban administration, has confirmed that Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, the head of the embassy, recently held a meeting with Rudra Gaurav Shresth, the Indian Ambassador to Iran.
In a statement issued on Monday, the embassy added that during the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of developing bilateral cooperation between Afghanistan and India.
According to the statement, the meeting also focused on expanding cooperation in the areas of exports and imports through the Chabahar port.
Chabahar port in Iran serves as a trade corridor for India and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan’s trade routes. India aims to reduce the Taliban’s reliance on Pakistan.
Amid rising tensions with Pakistan, the Taliban appears to be increasing its interactions with India, as seen in a meeting between Taliban’s Amir Khan Muttaqi and Indian officials.
This meeting marks a notable step in the efforts of the Taliban to improve ties with regional powers, particularly India, a key player in the region’s geopolitical landscape.
Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has been working to strengthen its diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and the international community. However, India has not engaged significantly with the Taliban so far.
The meeting between the Taliban’s representative and India’s ambassador could signal a shift in Afghanistan’s diplomatic relations, with both sides exploring new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation. However, it remains to be seen how these efforts will evolve amid the complex political dynamics in the region.
