BBC pundit reveals his ‘biggest fear’ for Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou this season
Despite Tottenham’s recent resurgence, concerns remain about the squad’s ability to navigate the remainder of the season unscathed. BBC pundit Nedum Onuoha has expressed his biggest fear for Spurs, warning that their progress could be derailed if injuries strike again.
While the past few weeks have offered some positives for Tottenham, with three wins in their last four Premier League matches, the campaign as a whole has been far from ideal.
Currently, Spurs find themselves out of both domestic cup competitions, and their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season are hanging by a thread. Unless they can win the Europa League, their chances of making the top four are virtually nonexistent.
To make matters worse, there is a real possibility that the club could miss out on European football altogether. Sitting 13th in the league, Tottenham are in a precarious position, and failure to climb the table in the final stretch of the campaign could have major consequences.
Nedum Onuoha expresses concerns over Tottenham’s squad depth
Despite signs of improvement and key players returning from injury, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has voiced his concerns about Tottenham’s ability to sustain momentum.
Speaking on BBC Sport, he highlighted his biggest fear for Postecoglou’s side, warning that a fresh injury crisis could derail their season completely.
“A trophy would by no means cover up the issues that they have had, but it gives them an opportunity to celebrate something positive,” Onuoha said.
“My biggest concern would be them being hit by any more injuries because that could have implications for their Europa League campaign.
“Although Postecoglou will be driving his players right to the end, it is never good mentally for fans, players, and the wider club if there is nothing to play for.
“There have been so many critiques of the manager this season and of the club as a whole, which I am sure the Spurs fans are tired of themselves. The only way to get rid of that is to win games of football.
“Postecoglou was being criticised when the team were doing well, so when they are not, it is obviously heightened. Plus, he has been picking a team for parts of this season that he would not normally have chosen, so it has been difficult to achieve his objectives.
“That is why I worry about the possibility of any more senior players being lost.”
Can Tottenham avoid another injury crisis?
Onuoha’s concerns are justified, given that at one point this season, Tottenham had as many as 12 players sidelined through injury.
This unprecedented crisis severely hampered their progress and left Postecoglou struggling to field a consistent starting eleven.
However, the club has since taken steps to address these issues. Tottenham have bolstered their medical department by hiring new staff, and there are even discussions about upgrading the gym, medical, and training facilities to improve player recovery and conditioning.
The hope now is that with a lighter fixture schedule, Spurs can keep their squad fit for the crucial run-in. If they can avoid another injury crisis, there is still a chance to salvage something from what has been a turbulent season.
