Bears land 14th in NFLPA survey as players torch former coach Matt Eberflus, Halas Hall food

INDIANAPOLIS — Bears players blasted former coach Matt Eberflus’ inability to communicate and poor organization in the annual NFLPA survey, which was released Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The team finished 14th in the rankings, which take into account everything from ownership and facilities to treatment of families. While chairman George McCaskey got an A-, players gave Eberflus a C — tying him with former Jaguars coach Doug Pederson and Browns coach Kevin Stefanski for worst in the league.

“The players’ most frequent complaint was Eberflus,” the union’s summary on the Bears said. “The players felt like he lacked a willingness to listen to the players and the leadership council, and he mismanaged the weekly team schedule.”

The Bears fired Eberflus in November after he botched the final minutes of a loss to the Lions and he exited with a 14-32 record in three seasons. They hired Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson last month to replace him, and the union’s report said “it will be interesting for the players to see if some of these areas change next year.”

In addition to their frustration with Eberflus, played dinged the Bears for treatment of their families with a C+ for the post-game family area at Soldier Field and the number of family events per year. They also gave the food and the cafeteria at Halas Hall a C+.

Players gave Eberflus a B coming off the 2023 season. The food at Halas Hall has been an ongoing issue with the Bears getting a D+ in 2023 and a C last year.

The facilities at Halas Hall earned an A for the weight room and A- for the locker room, and McCaskey was one of 13 owners to get at least an A-.
