US air base in Italy goes on lockdown for several hours over unspecified incident

A U.S. air base in Italy went on lockdown for several hours over an unspecified incident. Initial posts on Naval Air Station Sigonella's Facebook page on Wednesday morning said that the base was locked down “due to an ongoing situation.” A new post after several hours described the alert ending around 11:25 a.m. local time and traffic again being allowed on the base. The posts didn’t elaborate on what happened. A U.S. Navy spokesperson at the base said that there were no injuries. An Italian defense official said that it was a “false alarm that triggered all the due procedures.”
