Future German Chancellor: Europe must become independent from the US
Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s center-right party, stated on Sunday after his victory in the parliamentary elections that Germany and Europe must gradually become independent from the United States. He specifically pointed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that the U.S. is indifferent to Europe’s future.
Sunday’s election showcased a shift in Germany to the right, especially towards the far-right. Initial unofficial results show that Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leads with around 29% of the votes.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has gained support from figures like Trump ally J.D. Vance and Elon Musk, secured approximately 20% of the vote, marking a significant political surprise in Germany’s landscape.
To form a government, Merz needs at least one more coalition partner to achieve a parliamentary majority.
Merz, hours after the polls closed, stated that Germany and Europe need to fundamentally rebuild their security structure and end their dependence on Washington, as the U.S. president is indifferent to Europe’s fate. He emphasized that Europe must be strengthened as soon as possible and gradually achieve independence from the U.S.
This election outcome has raised significant questions about the future of German foreign policy, particularly its relationship with the United States and NATO. With the rise of far-right parties, the direction of Germany’s stance on energy, immigration, and security could shift dramatically.
Germany now faces a critical juncture where the future of its green energy transition and refugee policies might come under heavy scrutiny. The political landscape in Germany is evolving, and with right-wing forces gaining power, these policies could be in jeopardy, marking a pivotal moment for Europe’s role on the global stage.
