The Prince George Spruce Kings saw their four game win streak end in a wild 6-4 loss to the Chilliwack Chiefs on Friday night in Prince George.
Dustin Renas got the Chiefs on the board at 13:04 of the opening frame as his backhand shot found its way through Ryder Green, who made his first start since February 1st.
The Spruce Kings responded on the power play at 16:41 as Ryan Wachtel wouldn’t be denied scoring on his second opportunity in front. Assists went to Will Moore and Brendan Gillmore.
Early in the second period, Nathan Morin picked off an errant pass on the Spruce Kings second power play of the night, and went in all alone, deking Green to take a 2-1 lead.
The Chiefs would score on the power play at 9:21, and then again at 10:45 on a 2 on 1 to widen the gap to a 4-1 lead. Brendyn Van Oene with a deflection on the man advantage, and Brady Milburn finishing off the passing play were the goal scorers.
Late in the frame, Will Moore toe dragged around the defender and beat Quentin Miller to get the Spruce Kings back within two.
In the third period, Linden Makow scored his seventh of the season on the power play, before Wachtel scored just 19 seconds later for his second of the night to tie the game.
Within 2 minutes of Wachtel’s goal, the Chiefs turned a three-on-two into a go-ahead goal as Dwayne Jean Jr beat Green off a pass from Morin. Nico Grabas drew the assist.
Prince George came close to tying it in the final minute, but Renas scored his second of the night into an empty net to seal it.
With the loss, the Spruce Kings are now four points out of the final playoff spot, after the Langley River dropped tonight’s contest in overtime to the Surrey Eagles.
The Spruce Kings return to action tomorrow night at 6:00 PM at home against the Chiefs to complete the weekend doubleheader.
