This New York county's sales tax is increasing: What to know

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A county in New York will see its sales tax increase by March 1, according to the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance.

Suffolk County, located on Long Island, will see its sales tax go up to 8.75%. That’s an increase from about 8.63%, officials said.

It’s not the only tax going up in the county. Here’s what else is increasing:

  • Utilities, heating fuel taxes: 4.25% → about 4.38%
  • Taxes on clothing, footwear sales eligible for exemption: about 4.63% → 4.75%
  • Motor fuel, highway diesel motor fuel sales and use tax: 4.25% → about 4.38%

Residential energy sources and services, like electricity and natural gas, are exempt from the new sales tax increase, according to officials.
