‘Could have scored more if…’: Towhid Hridoy speaks about his Maiden ODI century during Champions Trophy 2025

Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy, who scored a match-turning century against India in their Champions Trophy opening clash, has a strong belief that he could have added more runs to the team total if he had not been troubled by cramps.

Bangladesh were visibly struggling against Indian bowling, and were down to 35/5 when Hridoy and Jaker Ali make path for the team to make a comeback. The pair made a partnership of 154 runs and took the team to a respectable total of 228.

When Hridoy was at 88 runs, he was struck by the cramps as he made a dive for a single, followed by struggling to even move. However, he did not lose hope and kept pushing his limits, eventually becoming the final Bangladeshi batter to fall.

Though it seemed easy from outside but that was not the case after losing five wickets. What happened is that I was patient during that point of time and I talked with myself how I can get out from here and I had the faith that if I can carry on, I can cover the dot balls. If I did not have the cramp I could have scored 20 to 30 more runs,” he said at the post-match press conference.

This century against India was the maiden ODI century for the 24-year-old, which came in after the batter had played in 30 innings. However, Hridoy feels that if Bangladesh had added 50 more runs, they might have had a chance to win the game.

I think 270 and thereabouts could have been a better score. When we lost the early wicket, I focused on how to make the partnership. When we played, me and Jaker, we just discussed, we have to build one big partnership from here. If Jaker had played a big innings, then it will be easier for us. But it’s okay, it’s part of the game.” he said.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh had won the toss and opted to bat first. Indian bowling attack was on point in the beginning overs, where Bangladesh team got even reduced to 35/5. However the match turned form there on, as Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali helped the team go past a score of 220 rums.

Indian batting started strong, with a lot of runs coming in powerplay overs. However, after dismissal of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Axar Patel, the speed of the game slowed down. It was Shubman Gill who eventually scored a brilliant inning of 101 runs and helped India complete their chase of 229 runs.
