Four series have aired – and viewers will be thrilled to learn the programme is returning for a fifth outing.

According to ITV, the new episodes will feature even more complex crimes for Professor T and the police unit.

Examples include a boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa.

Addressing the news, Ben Miller said: “I’m beyond thrilled that we will soon be breaking ground on a fifth series of Professor T.

“Working with such a talented cast and crew is a joy that even a heavy woollen suit can’t stifle, and I can’t wait for audiences to see the treats we’ve got in store for them in Series 4 later this year, when the Professor tackles his most baffling case yet: romance.

“The fact that audiences worldwide have embraced the show so warmly is hugely rewarding, and we’re already brimming with ideas to make Series 5 even more quirky, heartfelt, and surprising.

“Here’s to another season of baffling crime, dreaming spires, and ironing that tweed…”

In addition, Frances de la Tour reprises her role as The Professor’s mum Adelaide Tempest.

Barney White, Sunetra Sarker and Rhian Blundell will respectively return as Detective Dan Winters, DCI Maiya Goswami, and Detective Chloe Highsmith.

Also coming back is Juliet Stevenson as psychologist Dr. Helena Goldberg.

Elsewhere, Olivier Award winner Zoe Wanamaker is among the new cast members.

The accomplished actress played Susan Harper in BBC sitcom My Family from 2000 to 2011.

She will be taking on the role of Adelaide’s sister – and Jasper’s aunt -Zelda Radclyffe.

Fans of the show were shocked by the series three finale which saw Lisa Donkers killed off.

Further adding to the sadness, Lisa had just gotten engaged to Dan Winters.

Although Dan rushed to the scene of the crime, he was too late as the impact of the car proved too much for Lisa to handle.

A viewer wrote online: “Heartbreaking ending. #ProfessorT brilliant performances by cast. Ben Miller is awesome.”

While another added: “#ProfessorT I can’t believe Donkers was killed in last episode.Really upset about that.”
