Gunman shot when bystander intervenes in South Austin attempted robbery

A gunman was shot Tuesday afternoon when a bystander intervened during an attempted robbery in South Austin on the West Side.

A 68-year-old woman was walking in the 5000 block of West Congress Parkway about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when a would-be robber showed a firearm and demanded her property, Chicago police said.

A 38-year-old man struggled with the gunman, police said. During the struggle, the gunman was shot in his left leg.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, officials said.

Area 4 detectives were investigating.
