India, a land of diverse cultures and deep-rooted traditions, is home to nearly 500,000 temples, each carrying immense spiritual and historical significance. These sacred places not only serve as centers of faith but also attract millions of tourists who admire their architectural grandeur and cultural richness. Many of these temples have amassed extraordinary wealth over the years, thanks to the unwavering devotion of worshippers who offer donations ranging from a single rupee to vast fortunes worth crores. These contributions, given as a token of faith and gratitude, have resulted in temples accumulating immense treasures, including gold, diamond-studded ornaments, and priceless artifacts.

Every day, these revered sites host religious ceremonies and rituals, attracting countless devotees seeking blessings and spiritual fulfillment. The combined wealth of India’s temples runs into thousands of crores, making them among the richest religious institutions in the world.

Here’s a look at the top three wealthiest temples in India and the staggering fortune they hold.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple, situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, holds the title of the richest temple in India and the wealthiest in the world. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is said to house hidden treasures worth approximately Rs. 1 trillion in its underground chambers.

Devotees offer crowns, jewels, idols, and gold ornaments as a mark of their faith and devotion. Among its remarkable treasures, the Golden Idol of Mahavishnu alone is estimated to be worth Rs. 500 crore.

With a net worth of around Rs. 1,20,000 crore, the Padmanabhaswamy Temple stands as a symbol of both divine reverence and immense wealth, making it a truly extraordinary religious site.

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the 108 sacred centers of worship in Vaishnavism. Its historical significance dates back to early medieval Tamil literature (6th–9th centuries). Over the centuries, the temple underwent structural expansions, with major additions in the 16th century, including its magnificent ornate Gopuram (tower).

The temple contains six chambers, but Chamber B holds a unique spiritual significance. Unlike the other vaults, it is not part of the temple’s treasury. This sacred chamber is closely associated with Sri Padmanabhaswamy, housing an idol of the deity along with priceless valuables that are believed to enhance the divine energy of the presiding deity.

Tirupati Balaji Temple

The Tirupati Balaji Temple, also known as Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, is the second richest temple in India. Built in the 10th century, it is one of the most visited religious sites in the world.

According to a government report, the temple receives approximately USD 6 million in daily donations from around 30,000 devotees. As of last year, its total estimated wealth exceeded Rs 900 crore, including an astonishing 52 tonnes of gold jewelry.

Each year, the temple deposits over 3,000 kg of donated gold into gold reserves with nationalized banks. The net worth of Tirupati Balaji Temple stands at Rs 650 crore.

Mata Vaishno Devi

The Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine is the third richest temple in India. Situated 14 km from Katra, this revered site is nestled inside a millions-of-years-old cave at an altitude of 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu.

With over 10 million pilgrims visiting annually, it is the second most visited temple in India, following Tirupati Balaji. In the past five years, devotees have donated hundreds of kilograms of gold, raising the temple’s gold reserves to 1.2 tonnes.

Every year, the temple receives donations worth approximately Rs 500 crore, with its net worth also estimated at Rs 500 crore.
