Ange Postecoglou has turned his nose up at the suggestion that Manchester United deserve sympathy due to injuries, pointing out that he has had to deal with far worse for far longer without any condolences from Tottenham’s rivals.

Tottenham deliver energetic performance to get back to winning ways

Spurs welcomed two senior players back from injury for Sunday’s big clash, with James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario returning to the starting lineup.

Both senior players made big contributions, with Maddison scoring the only goal of the game and the Italian goalkeeper coming up with some crucial stops at the other end of the pitch to help the Lilywhites emerge victorious and with a clean sheet.

The performance of the home side was full of energy, which was perhaps only made possible by the return to the injured players and the fact that Spurs had a full week off before the game – a situation which Postecoglou’s men were not used to over recent months.

Ange Postecoglou bites back at Man United injury claim

Tottenham were still without several key players for Sunday’s clash, with the likes of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Richarlison, and Dominic Solanke still on the mend, while Destiny Udogie was only fit enough to make the bench.

Man Utd also had more than their fair share of injuries, with Ruben Amroim’s bench filled with teenagers.

However, Postecoglou does not have any sympathy for his opposite number, pointing out that Tottenham have been dealing with this kind of situation for several months.

The Spurs head coach said after his side’s 1-0 win (via Fabrizio Romano): “Man United with many injured players? If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other coaches.

“I could see Rúben there, players out of position, kids on the bench… welcome to my world. But that’s for 1 game. Now do that for 2 months.”

Postecoglou’s comments might have been fuelled by pre-match exchange

While Postecoglou’s point is a fair one, he has usually tended to be diplomatic when addressing the situation of other managers.

The fact that he has said what he did about a lack of sympathy for Amorin might have been fuelled by the Man Utd boss’ pre-match comments.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Portuguese coach was asked about the pressure Postecoglou is under at Spurs, and he insisted that he is dealing with more pressure than the Australian since he is at a bigger club.
