The Woods Hole Community has bought the home of CAI, but the station will still have to move
Last week I wrote about how GBH decided, without warning, to sell the home of Cape Cod public radio station CAI — and the community uproar that followed. Today, I bring a small update: The Woods Hole Community Association has officially bought the Captain Davis House for $1.8 million, using a combination of its own cash reserves, funds from the Woods Hole Foundation, and donations from more than 350 people.
A happy ending, then? Well, sort of. According to a statement sent by GBH and signed jointly by GBH and the WHCA, “CAI is looking for a more suitable home nearby and will provide uninterrupted service during the move” — which means the station will likely still be forced to move, though GBH wouldn’t answer questions on the record about why.
“The Woods Hole Community Association understands that WGBH is looking for a new home for WCAI,” the WHCA wrote in its own email update on Thursday. “We hope that WGBH will take the time to thoroughly consider the value of staying in the Davis House under Community Association ownership. Whatever the final outcome, we envision the Captain Davis House as providing a key element to the unique mix of Woods Hole village: amid the world-class science institutions and colorful local businesses, the Captain Davis House can now continue to be a home to creative endeavors that reach outward into the world and enrich the widest possible community.”
