Sunday brings in potential for thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 60 mph
The D.C. region is in for quite a Sunday as forecasters are anticipating a spell of thunderstorms, with a side of very powerful winds.
After a momentary reprieve from the heavy rain showers, residents may encounter areas of fog as a light drizzle forms in the morning hours.
However, by noon, the story isn’t quite the same. 7News First Alert Meteorologist Mark Peña told WTOP that after the “lull in activity,” the region is forecast to experience some thunderstorms after another round of showers arrive.
While temperatures will warm up and reach between the high 50s to the low 60s, expect strong wind gusts as high as 60 mph.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning that will remain in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. After midnight, wind gusts are expected to hover near 40 mph.
Caution is strongly urged due to the potential for power outages and downed trees.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service said in an advisory. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
Looking into the week ahead, the big focus falls to the middle of the week as forecasters suspect the D.C. area will be dealt another serving of snow late Wednesday into Thursday.
7News First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans said snow is expected to begin in the late afternoon Wednesday. He said to plan for heavy snow during the evening through the overnight.
However, Peña warns the weather outlook remains “highly subject to change as we get closer.”
