Re: Cup goalkeeper

Goalkeeper and particularly back-up is a hard position to recruit.

Unlike outfield, it's highly feasible that the first choice keeper plays every single minute of every league game.

When you are recruiting a backup, they will know this, but to get them to sign will need assurances over opportunities in the cup. This will include whether or not they will find themselves as cup Goalkeeper from first round to final or if they would be dropped along the way.

We don't know how the negotiations went with the two keepers but they were seen without an obvious first choice/back-up and they battled through pre-season/early season. I imagine that to both of them it was laid out as above in that whoever is back-up will be the cup Goalkeeper.

If that was the promise and CD went back on it, the fall-out is potentially bigger than sticking to the original agreement.

Is BPF a well liked member and would it be seen by others as unfair?

How would it impact signing goalkeepers in the future if the promises given are taken away?

Would Allsopp himself actually want to take the opportunity away from BPF as the "goalkeepers union".

It's really not as black and white as pick the best keeper every game.

Imagine no back-up keeper would want to sign for us next season and then the number 1 gets injures first week of September and we end up with the u21 goalie for 3 months. People would be livid. This is why having an adequate number 2 is so important and that means gentleman's agreements made regarding playing time at negotiations need to be respected.

I understand the sentiment in your argument. However let’s not forget BPF was our first choice but lost his place due to multiple errors. A commitment to an individual player is far outweighed by what’s good for the club. He can get his confidence back playing once our targets are met and then prove himself as equal to Allsop.

Yes and I'd argue what's good for the club is that BPF (or any back-up keeper) plays in the games he's expecting to.
