Batavia man killed in snowmobile accident in Herkimer County

0

TOWN OF WEBB, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- A Sunday morning snowmobile crash in the Town of Webb on Fourth Lake has left a Batavia man dead, according to New York State Police.

Troopers were called to State Route 28 in the Town of Webb just before 3 am on Sunday, February 9 for reports of a multi-snowmobile accident. Further investigation found that five people were riding around that area on Fourth Lake, listed below:

  • 22-year-old Spencer Schmidt of Batavia
  • 26-year-old Cole Phelps
  • 26-year-old Carl Stephens
  • 26-year-old Joshua Boyle
  • 26-year-old Zachary Dusky

Investigators say that the crash involved a disabled, unoccupied snowmobile that had been left on the lake. Investigators found that that snowmobile was registered to 37-year-old Eric Butler. Evidence at the scene suggests that the snowmobiles driven by Schmidt, Phelps, Stephens and Boyle all collided with either one another or the stationary snowmobile.

Police say Dusky was the only one who avoided the accident and left the scene with an undamaged snowmobile.

Spencer was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.

Due to the weather conditions and location of the accident, all of the other parties were evaluated on the scene. Police say none of them appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and there was no indication of criminal activity.

All snowmobiles were transported to the State Police station in Carthage for further investigation by the New York State Police's Collision Reconstruction and Forensic Investigation Units.

This is an ongoing investigation. We will provide more information as it becomes available to us.
