Glastonbury fans convinced 70s band have signed up to play festival two years after performing with A-list star
GLASTONBURY fans are hopeful that an iconic band that wowed festival-goers in 2023 has signed up for another stint on Worthy Farm.
The speculation mill continues to churn ahead of the official line-up release and all manner of artists are in the mix to make the cut.
Among them are eccentric American duo Sparks, who played chief support on The Park stage two years ago.
On that occasion, the eccentric genre-bending brothers (Ron and Russell Mael) were joined by none other than Hollywood star Cate Blanchett on the farm in 2023 for the track This Girl is Crying in her Latte.
Blanchett appeared in the music video for the track and in 2023 said of working with the Mael brothers: “I love Russell and Ron.
“We were at the Cesar Awards together in France and got on really well… and we just stayed in touch. And then Russell asked: Would I, on my mobile phone, record just me mugging around to their latest single? I said, sure… It was one of those kind of crazy nights and, at 3 o’clock in the morning, I did something.
“But then I said, ‘You know, I’m gonna be in L.A.,’ and they said, ‘Come round.’ … It was really quick. It was so much fun.”
In the run-up to this year’s festival the band is playing two nights at the Hammersmith Apollo and two nights at the O2 Apollo in Manchester leading some to believe it would be the perfect warm-up for another Glasto gig.
One fan wrote: “Sparks on tour in June. Glastonbury again? Hope so.”
Another said: “They were part of an awesome weekend a couple of years ago. So glad I saw them. Would love to see them again.
A third wrote: “They were my festival highlight when they headlined the Park Stage a couple of years ago.”
The band is best known for its 1974 hit This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us and has always been better received on this side of the Atlantic than its native land.
In total, Sparks have had four UK top 10 albums as well as a top 20 record as FFS, which was recorded with Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand.
The two bands headlined Woodsies in 2015 with a 16-song set peppered with both bands’ biggest hits.
