Trump: Arab Nations will accept Palestinians after talks on Gaza ownership
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his commitment to the “purchase and ownership of Gaza” and mentioned the possibility of transferring parts of it to other Middle Eastern countries. He also said that after talks with him, Arab nations would be willing to accept Palestinians.
Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to the Super Bowl, stated that the people of Gaza have no place to return to. “There is nothing to go back to. This place is a destroyed region. What’s left will also be destroyed,” he said.
Israel has urged Western and Islamic countries to accept individuals from Gaza who voluntarily wish to leave the region. Trump suggested that the U.S. may consider accepting some Palestinian refugees.
Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, have strongly rejected Israeli officials’ plans to settle Gaza’s people in another country, using sharp language in their opposition.
Shortly after Trump’s remarks, Hamas condemned the plan, asserting that all efforts to displace Palestinians to other countries would fail.
During the Gaza war, a series of exchanges took place between Israel and Hamas to swap hostages for Palestinian prisoners. On Saturday morning, Hamas released three Israeli captives, while Israel confirmed the release of 183 Palestinians, who were transferred from various prisons and taken to the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza.
This exchange was part of a broader temporary ceasefire agreement, aimed at reducing tensions and providing a humanitarian pause amidst the ongoing conflict.
The deal has faced widespread skepticism, with critics questioning the effectiveness of short-term agreements. However, the swap of prisoners is seen as a significant gesture by both sides, aimed at building trust.
International mediation efforts continue as regional powers, including Egypt and Qatar, push for a more stable long-term resolution, but the path to peace remains fraught with complex political and security issues.
