Artists invited to work with Spellow Hub community to look to the future
Artists and arts organisations are being invited to apply to develop and deliver an artistic residency in and around Spellow Community Hub and Library in Walton.
The participatory programme, which will be delivered from February to May, will address and explore how people feel after the riots, the reopening of the library and perception of the community moving forward.
This project will be part of Culture Liverpool’s Creative Neighbourhoods programme and a wider community cohesion initiative delivered by Liverpool City Council.
Creative Neighbourhoods is an ongoing programme of collaborative projects and creative interventions that engage with communities and neighbourhoods throughout Liverpool. The programme includes artistic residencies, development of public art, events and creative engagement workshops.
The work aims to address the needs of each community at a neighbourhood level, using co-creative practices to encourage local pride, a sense of place, inclusivity, accessibility and empowerment.
Examples of previous place-based artistic residencies can be found here: www.cultureliverpool.co.uk/creative-neighbourhoods/
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said: “The torching of Spellow Community Hub and Library during the race riots last summer prompted a huge outcry and a nationwide response, with book donations from Her Majesty the Queen and a host of famous authors, as well as a £250,000 fundraising campaign. The reopening of Spellow Library Hub in December marked the start of a new beginning for Walton.
“This residency will centre the voices of this neighbourhood following the arson attack, focusing on themes of community cohesion, sanctuary, and resilience.”
The deadline is 5pm on Friday 21 February.
