The fifth and sixth satellites in Maxar’s WorldView Legion constellation are performing well after a Wednesday evening launch.

SpaceX launched the satellites on a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:13 p.m. ET on Feb. 5. According to Maxar, once all six WorldView Legion satellites are fully operational, the constellation can collect more than 6 million square kilometers of Earth imagery per day.

Maxar said these satellite capabilities provide increased capacity for mission planning and real-time imagery collection, supporting site monitoring, emergency response, and maritime surveillance. Additionally, these capabilities enable the creation of basemaps and 3D maps for mapmaking and telecommunications planning, while offering global insights.

“The additional capacity enables us to collect more timely data over more locations, and it will further fuel the industry’s most advanced 2D and 3D geospatial content products,” said Maxar CEO Dan Smoot. “Combining this capacity with our AI-powered technologies and software platform puts Maxar in a unique position to deliver the ground truth.”

The WorldView Legion satellites are designed to operate in both mid-inclination and Sun-Synchronous Orbits, enabling dawn-to-dusk image collection. They offer up to 15 revisits per day of certain locations.

The first two WorldView Legion satellites were launched in May 2024 and are currently supporting customer missions, while the second pair, launched in August 2024, began delivering images late last year.
